An Anti-Rape Crises Cell (ARCC) has been established at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad to support survivors of sexual violence, as announced in a statement issued by PIMS on Monday. The ARCC is a collaborative effort of the Ministry of Law and Justice, Ministry of Health, UK Government, UN Population Fund (UNFPA), and Legal Aid Society, aimed at implementing the Anti-Rape (Trial and Investigation) Act, 2021.
This act ensures justice for survivors of sexual offenses and provides necessary services and support before, during, and after a trial. The establishment of ARCCs across districts is part of this initiative, offering survivors access to services such as FIR registration, evidence collection, and medical examination within six hours.
During the official announcement, officials expressed their appreciation for the support in establishing the ARCC and emphasized the importance of addressing critical issues of gender-based violence. They highlighted the need for timely and effective assistance to survivors of rape and the importance of expanding these services to all communities across Pakistan.
Additionally, the importance of prevention, awareness, and a comprehensive response system for survivors was emphasized, with a focus on ensuring a victim-centric support system. The UK’s High Commissioner expressed pride in partnering with Pakistan to address gender-based violence and highlighted the significance of the new ARCC facility in providing quicker response services to survivors under one roof.
The Executive Director of PIMS affirmed the hospital’s commitment to providing support to survivors of sexual violence and reducing their trauma through psychosocial support, ensuring that cases will be handled with respect, care, and confidentiality throughout the medical examination.
