The Philippines has strongly condemned the China Coast Guard for allegedly using water cannon against its vessels in the disputed South China Sea. The incident occurred on Saturday as the Philippine Coast Guard was escorting boats carrying supplies to Filipino military personnel stationed in the Spratly Islands. The US State Department has also condemned China’s actions, stating that they directly threaten regional peace and stability.

China claims a significant portion of the South China Sea, which sees trillions of dollars in trade passing through annually. Despite a 2016 international court ruling that invalidated China’s claims, Beijing has continued to assert its authority in the area. The Chinese coast guard and navy have frequently blocked or followed Philippine ships patrolling contested waters.

This is the first time since November 2021 that the Chinese coast guard has used water cannon against a Philippine resupply mission. The Philippine Coast Guard has strongly condemned these actions, highlighting that they not only endanger the safety of their crew and supply boats but also violate international laws.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines reported that one of its resupply vessels was blocked and water cannoned by the Chinese coast guard. The excessive and offensive actions prevented a second vessel from unloading its cargo for a routine troop rotation and resupply operation. The military has called on China to act responsibly and prevent miscalculations and accidents that put lives at risk.

The Chinese embassy in Manila has not yet responded to the accusations. The Philippines and China have a long history of maritime disputes in the South China Sea. While former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte sought closer ties with Beijing to attract investment, the current administration is taking a stronger stance in defending its territorial claims.
