The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has strongly criticized the re-arrest of Pervaiz Elahi and expressed concerns about the violation of the rule of law and power dynamics in Pakistan’s political landscape. In a statement, PBC Vice-Chairman Haroonur Rashid and Executive Committee Chairman Hassan Raza Pasha condemned the manhandling and re-arrest of Pervaiz Elahi, highlighting that it was in violation of the Lahore High Court’s order.
Pervaiz Elahi, the former Chief Minister of Punjab, was re-arrested from Zahoor Elahi Road, Lahore, just hours after being released by the Lahore High Court in the Asset Beyond Means case. The capital police arrested him under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order and will transfer him to Islamabad by helicopter.
The arrest of Pervaiz Elahi is related to the Assets Beyond Means case, where the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had detained him for failing to provide information. The case also involves his son Monis Elahi and other family members, with an inquiry initiated against Moonis Elahi in the excessive assets case.
The PBC emphasized the importance of obeying court orders and upholding the Constitution. They raised concerns over the implementation of orders passed in political matters and urged the courts to carefully consider the feasibility of their implementation.
The PBC’s condemnation of the manhandling and re-arrest of Pervaiz Elahi underscores the need for adherence to the rule of law and the protection of individuals’ constitutional rights in Pakistan.
