A ‘fidgety’ man was apprehended on an Alaska Airlines flight from Seattle to Las Vegas for attacking a fellow passenger with a makeshift weapon made of pens and elastic bands, local authorities reported. The assailant, identified as Julio Alvarez Lopez, allegedly threatened the victim’s wife and son after stabbing him with the homemade pen shank. Lopez was taken into custody at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas on January 24 and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. The airline commended the crew for their handling of the situation, as the flight landed safely despite the violent altercation. Lopez reportedly admitted to planning the attack, claiming he believed the victim was a member of the cartel and was pursuing him. He confessed to intending to kill the passenger and even described how he made the weapon with rubber bands and pens just before takeoff.
