President Arif Alvi and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) have reached an agreement to hold general elections on February 8. This agreement was reached following a meeting between the president and the ECP, which was directed by the Supreme Court. The meeting discussed the date for the elections and the progress made by the ECP on delimitation of constituencies. Both the Presidency and the ECP released statements confirming the agreement on the election date. Earlier in the day, the Chief Justice of Pakistan directed the ECP to consult with the president on the poll date after the ECP announced February 11 as the date. The ECP lawyer argued that they were not obligated to consult with the president, drawing criticism from the Chief Justice. Following a half-hour recess in the hearing, the ECP confirmed that they would be consulting with the president. The Chief Justice then announced that the election date given would have to be implemented and that the Supreme Court wanted the polls to be held without any delays. A PPP lawyer later suggested that a constitutional amendment be made to validate the election date.
