The Foreign Office (FO) has strongly condemned the “barbaric” killing of three individuals in the custody of the Indian army in held Kashmir. The FO stated that the incident has revealed the neighboring country’s “relentless state terrorism” in the occupied valley. The Associated Press had reported a day earlier that three Kashmiris were tortured to death while in Indian army custody. According to locals and residents, the army had arrested at least eight civilians for interrogation following an attack on two army vehicles in Poonch. The report stated that locals accused army personnel of torturing the three individuals to death in a nearby military camp, and the bodies later showed marks of severe torture. The families of the other five individuals who were severely tortured reported that they were moved to an army hospital. Videos purportedly showing the detention and torture of civilians spread online and triggered widespread anger. Internet services on smart devices in Poonch and Rajouri were also cut off to dispel possible protests and discourage dissemination of the videos. The FO issued a statement strongly condemning the “barbaric custodial killing” of the three Kashmiris, emphasizing that the incident exposes India’s relentless state terrorism in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The FO called for the perpetrators of these custodial killings to be held accountable and asserted that India’s brutal occupation is the root cause of major issues in IIOJK. The FO also stressed the Kashmiri people’s inalienable right to self-determination as enshrined in relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
