A resolution seeking delay in the Feb 8 general elections was submitted to the Senate a day after another resolution was adopted. This new resolution emphasizes the need to adhere to “constitutional requirements” and ensure the timely conduct of the polls. PML-N Senator Afnan Ullah Khan had opposed the non-binding resolution that was passed on Friday, and the passage of the resolution was criticized by various political parties. In response, JI Senator Mushtaq Ahmed Khan submitted a fresh resolution calling for the timely conduct of the elections. Meanwhile, Senator Dilawar denied that the resolution for poll delay was presented at someone’s direction and BAP Secretary-General Senator Manzoor Kakar called on all political parties to unite in support of the resolution passed by the Senate. Additionally, a contempt and treason petition was filed in the Supreme Court against the Senate chairman and other senators present in Friday’s session. The petition argues that the resolution signified a malicious intent and hidden motives to undermine the democratic process and calls for legal action against the senators.
