The truce between Israel and Hamas appears to be continuing into its fifth day, as the two sides have completed their fourth release of captives from Gaza in exchange for Palestinians held in Israeli jails under the original four-day truce deal. There is an agreement in place to extend the truce by two days, according to the country Qatar, which, alongside Egypt, has been facilitating indirect talks between Israel and Hamas. The Israeli government has yet to officially confirm the truce extension by early on Tuesday morning, but reports suggest that more captives are expected to be released. A total of 69 Israeli and foreign captives have been released by Hamas since the truce began on Friday. In return, 150 Palestinian prisoners have been released by Israel. The original truce also allowed for more aid trucks to be brought into Gaza, which is facing shortages of food, fuel, drinking water, and medicine. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has described the extension of the truce as a “glimpse of hope and humanity,” but has noted that two more days is not enough time to meet Gaza’s aid needs. The extension of the truce is seen as a positive development, but Israel remains committed to crushing Hamas militarily and has warned that its war on Gaza will resume.
