Iran admitted that its Revolutionary Guard had fired two missiles at the Ukraine International Airlines plane shortly after takeoff, killing 176 people. Canada, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine have filed a complaint with the United Nations civil aviation agency against Iran for shooting down the passenger plane. They accused Tehran of breaching its international legal obligations by using weapons against a civil aircraft in flight. The four countries have also filed a case with the International Court of Justice seeking reparations from Iran for the families of the victims. Iran has issued initial sentences for 10 unnamed people accused of involvement in the incident and has set compensation of $150,000 for each family of the victims, with payments already underway. Additionally, Iran has accused Canada of violating its international obligations by allowing people to seek civil damages against Tehran.
