The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has lost contact with its tiny helicopter, Ingenuity, during its 72nd flight. The agency’s engineers are working to re-establish communications after the craft’s abrupt loss of contact during a test flight descent. Ingenuity arrived on Mars in 2021 with the rover Perseverance and made history as the first motorized craft to fly autonomously on another planet. Data from the helicopter’s flights are transmitted back to Earth via Perseverance. Despite experiencing occasional communication issues, Ingenuity has far exceeded its original goal of five flights over 30 days and has covered over 10 miles and reached altitudes of up to 79 feet. Powered by solar panels, Ingenuity must survive the extremely cold Martian nights. It has worked alongside Perseverance as an aerial scout in the search for signs of ancient microbial life.
