The people of Sindh have given their mandate to the PPP in the Feb 8 election as it is aspiring to form government in the province for the fourth consecutive term. The polls helped the past ruling party of the second largest province of the country to strengthen its mandate. The MQM-Pakistan regained its lost ground in urban centers, while the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) received a serious dent in rural areas, even losing in its strongholds. In Karachi, voters faced shocks, upsets, and pleasant surprises when official results started to pour in. The PPP led with 84 out of a total of 130 seats in the Sindh Assembly, while the PTI-backed independents won 14 PA seats in Karachi. The PTI, which won 23 seats in the Sindh Assembly in 2018, was out of the contest after losing its iconic electoral symbol ‘bat’ following a Supreme Court ruling. However, it backed its workers and local leaders as independent candidates across Karachi, resulting in the winners of 14 seats from the city. The MQM-P won 26 Sindh Assembly seats, 17 of them in Karachi, while the Jamaat-i-Islami won two seats in the Feb 8 polls. The PPP made a comeback in its erstwhile stronghold of Badin, while the GDA suffered a major setback. The results raised questions about the transparency and fairness of the voting process, particularly in Karachi, with many people expressing dissatisfaction with the election results.
