Maryam Nawaz surrenders NA-119 seat

Maryam Nawaz, poised to become the first female chief minister of Punjab, has reportedly resigned from NA-119 and written a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), according to sources within the party.

Sources also revealed that the PML-N leader will retain PP-159 to assume the role of chief minister. She secured the PP-189 seat in Lahore with 23,598 votes, defeating PTI-backed independent candidate Sharafat Ali Khan, who received 21,491 votes.

PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif had previously announced that Maryam Nawaz would be the party’s candidate for the chief minister of Punjab.

The newly elected MPAs are scheduled to take oath in the inaugural session of the Punjab Assembly today (Friday).

The Governor of Punjab, Muhammad Balighur Rehman, has called for the inaugural session following the general elections held on February 8.

Speaker of the Punjab Assembly Sabatin Khan will administer the oath to the elected representatives, officially inducting them into the legislative body.

Additionally, the schedule for the election of the new speaker and deputy speaker of the house will be announced.

Tight security measures are in place around the Punjab Assembly building, with more than 500 policemen deployed. APCs, water canon vehicles, and the Anti-Riots Dolphin Force are also on standby to prevent any untoward incidents.
