Shenna Bellows, the Maine Secretary of State, has announced that Donald Trump has been disqualified from the 2024 presidential primary ballot in Maine due to his support of insurrection. She cited a clause in the US Constitution that prohibits those who have “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” from holding public office. Bellows stated that the storming of the US Capitol on January 6 occurred with the knowledge and support of the former president. Although Trump is currently facing criminal charges related to the 2020 election, he has not been charged with insurrection in relation to January 6. The Trump campaign has indicated that they will challenge Bellows’ decision in court. Despite Maine’s small population, the state could have an impact in the 2024 election, as Trump secured one electoral vote from the rural 2nd district in both 2016 and 2020.
