In the U.S. Capitol, influential labour leaders have united with progressive legislators to urge President Joe Biden’s administration to support a ceasefire in Gaza. At a news conference, representatives from the United Auto Workers (UAW), United Electrical Workers, and the American Postal Workers Union made their appeal, framing it as part of the labour movement’s longstanding support for human rights issues globally.

The news conference, organized by Democratic Representatives Cori Bush and Rashida Tlaib, highlighted the historical connection between labour movements and the fight for human dignity. The UAW president emphasized that unions have been instrumental in combating various forms of discrimination and called on elected officials to end the violence in Gaza.

Labour leaders and Congress members underscored the political influence of unions, noting their significant memberships wields electoral power. They suggested that President Biden could face repercussions at the ballot box if he fails to support the call for a ceasefire.

The UAW’s president highlighted that workers are funding Israel’s actions in Palestine and urged them to use their labour and electoral power to support Palestinian freedom. Additionally, a representative from the American Postal Workers Union emphasized the union’s commitment to equality, social justice, and international solidarity.

Despite President Biden’s self-proclaimed pro-labour stance, his refusal to call for a ceasefire in Gaza could alienate unions as he seeks reelection in 2024. Biden has been cautious about criticizing Israel’s military offensive, citing the country’s right to defend itself. However, widespread humanitarian concerns and growing demands for a ceasefire have placed pressure on him.

Many within Biden’s own party have criticized his unwavering support for Israel, with an increasing number of US Congress members calling for a ceasefire. Furthermore, a majority of Americans support the calls for a ceasefire, especially among Democrats.

With the 2024 presidential race approaching, Biden is keen on securing the support of union workers, particularly in key swing states like Michigan. The UAW, a significant player in Michigan due to its large membership, has yet to endorse a candidate for the 2024 race. Both Biden and his potential Republican rival, Donald Trump, have been vying for support from auto workers, indicating the importance of union endorsements in key states.

The UAW president called on the rest of the labour movement to join the mission for peace and social justice, emphasizing the significance of union support for a ceasefire in Gaza.
