The ongoing grain exports dispute between Ukraine and Poland is causing harm to both countries, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba. With Poland extending an embargo on Ukrainian grain, going against the European Commission’s decision to lift the restrictions, tensions between the two allies have escalated.

In a recent interview with Interfax-Ukraine, Kuleba emphasized the need for a constructive solution, stating, “We don’t need this grain war and neither does Poland.” He further cautioned that the situation could worsen as emotions run high ahead of the Polish elections on October 15.

The Polish government, which has strong support in agricultural regions, has presented the grain embargo as a means to protect Polish farmers. Kuleba acknowledged that the issue would eventually be resolved but highlighted the potential long-term consequences of escalating tensions.

Expressing concern, Kuleba said that planting the narrative of Ukrainian ingratitude in the minds of the Polish people could have a negative impact on security. He dismissed allegations of ingratitude as an “outright lie” and emphasized Ukraine’s deep gratitude to the Polish people and government.

Poland has been one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters since Russia’s incursion in February 2022, serving as a major weapons supplier for Kyiv.

Ultimately, both Ukraine and Poland have a vested interest in resolving this dispute amicably to ensure the well-being of their bilateral relationship.
