A fatwa has been issued in Kohistan against women election candidates and their campaigning, with claims that the act is un-Islamic. A group of clerics have declared that women soliciting votes is against sharia law. This comes as three women have entered the electoral arena for the first time in Kohistan. The candidates include Tehmina Faheem, Momina Basit, and Sannaya Sabeel. Tehmina Faheem, backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, has stated that she will respond to the decree after consulting her party’s leadership. The fatwa also disallows voting along ethnic lines, according to the clerics. Meanwhile, the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl has denied any electoral alliance with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz for the upcoming general elections. JUI-F provincial emir Maulana Attaur Rehman has stated that there is no seat adjustment between the two parties, refuting claims made by PML-N leaders. The JUI-F has vowed to bring about an “Islamic revolution” through the country’s votes. Additionally, senior lawyer Umar Farooq has passed away and was laid to rest at a local graveyard. To find your constituency and polling booth, you can text your NIC number to 8300 and visit the ECP website for candidate information.
