Bollywood veteran Jackie Shroff recently commented on the reports suggesting that the Indian government is contemplating changing the country’s official name to ‘Bharat’.
During an event in Delhi, Shroff joined the ongoing discussion surrounding the proposed name change. He stated, “There is nothing wrong with calling it Bharat. Whether it’s India or Bharat, it doesn’t matter.”
In response to his statement, Shroff further explained, “My name is Jackie, but some people call me Jockey or Jaykee. They may mess up my name, but it doesn’t change who I am. Names can change, but we won’t.”
Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan also appeared to support the name change by tweeting, “Bharat mata ki jai,” which translates to “Victory to Mother India” in Hindi.
According to reports, the Indian government discussed the possibility of changing the country’s official name to ‘Bharat’ during a special session of Parliament. This speculation was fueled by an invitation from Rashtrapati Bhawan, the President’s House, which was sent in the name of ‘President of Bharat’ instead of the usual ‘President of India’ for a G20 dinner on September 9.
Regardless of the outcome, the sentiments expressed by Jackie Shroff and Amitabh Bachchan emphasize the significance of identity and the unchanging spirit of the Indian nation.
