Indian rescuers have advised that it may take up to two more days to clear the rubble and reach the 40 workers who have been trapped in a collapsed tunnel for nearly a week. Excavators have been working since Sunday to clear the debris and create an escape route for the workers. However, rescue efforts have been hampered by falling debris and problems with an earth-boring drill. The air force has flown in a second drilling machine to assist with the rescue. Engineers are attempting to drive a steel pipe through the debris to create a passage for the trapped men. It is estimated that it will take another 40-48 hours to rescue the workers at the current rate of progress. Indian authorities have sought advice from the Thai company that rescued children from a flooded cave in 2018 and experts in soil and rock mechanics at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute. Rescuers have been communicating with the trapped men using radios and have sent food, water, oxygen, and medicine through a small pipe. The condition of the men is unknown, but some are reportedly experiencing health issues. A field hospital has been set up outside the site, and ambulances are on standby to transfer serious cases to a proper hospital. The collapsed tunnel was being constructed to connect two holy Hindu shrines.
