An Israeli intelligence report claimed that some staff of the UN Palestinian aid agency have been involved in abductions and killings during a raid in Gaza. The report, seen by Reuters, alleges that 190 UNRWA employees, including teachers, are also members of Hamas or Islamic Jihad. The Palestinians have accused Israel of falsifying information and tarnishing UNRWA’s reputation. The dossier has caused over 10 countries, including the US and Germany, to halt funding for the agency. UNRWA says it may not be able to continue operations without resumed funding, as it provides day-to-day assistance to over half of Gaza’s population. Israel has long accused UNRWA of discouraging the resettlement of refugees and has claimed that agency staff have participated in armed attacks against it. UNRWA denies these allegations and says its role is strictly for relief. The United Nations has an ongoing probe into the matter.
