A potential six-week truce agreement in Gaza has been proposed, according to a US official, and now Hamas must make a decision. The United States states that Israel has essentially accepted the framework of a proposed ceasefire and prisoner release deal, leaving the ball in Hamas’ court to agree. International mediators have been working to broker a deal before the start of Ramadan. The proposal includes a six-week ceasefire and the release of vulnerable captives by Hamas, as well as the delivery of aid to desperate Palestinians in northern Gaza. Talks are expected to resume in Egypt, with Egypt and Qatar scheduled to receive a response from Hamas. The goal is for the temporary truce to lead to a process towards ending the war altogether. A similar truce in November resulted in the release of captives in exchange for Palestinian women and children held in Israeli prisons.
