In the October 7 attack by Hamas on southern Israel, over 1,400 people were killed and hundreds were taken as captives. Hamas has stated that it plans to use the captives as leverage to secure the release of thousands of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ruled out negotiations and instead focused on bombarding the Gaza Strip. So far, over 9,000 Palestinians have been killed, including over 3,700 children. The number of captives is estimated to be around 240, including Israeli soldiers, civilians, and foreigners. While Hamas considers captives with dual citizenship to be Israeli, several countries, including Russia, the United States, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Argentina, and the Netherlands, have called for the release of their citizens. Additionally, Hamas has claimed that Israeli captives are being held by civilian residents of the Gaza Strip. Four captives have been released through diplomatic negotiations, and Hamas has expressed its willingness to conduct a prisoner swap. Families of captives are demanding immediate action to secure their release, while Netanyahu has promised to exhaust all possibilities to bring them home.
