Indonesian President Joko Widodo met with US President Joe Biden at the White House and urged the US to help end the “atrocities” in Gaza and bring about a ceasefire. Widodo, also known as Jokowi, attended a summit of Arab and Muslim leaders in Riyadh over the weekend, where Israel was condemned and a ceasefire was called for. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, has seen large protests in support of the Palestinians and has boycotted businesses linked to Israel.

During their meeting in the Oval Office, Widodo called for a ceasefire “for the sake of humanity” as the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues. Widodo also discussed the US’s role in the Middle East and other long-term goals, such as a two-state solution and the rebuilding of Gaza. The US is looking to deepen its ties with Indonesia and Biden has unveiled an upgrade to ties with the country, aiming for a comprehensive strategic partnership.

The ongoing crisis in Myanmar was also discussed, with the US and other Western countries imposing sanctions and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations struggling to hold the military accountable. The talks between Biden and Jokowi also focused on new cooperation in defense, cybersecurity, space, and climate. Jokowi emphasized Indonesia’s neutrality and willingness to cooperate with any country for the sake of peace and humanity.
