An Indian state recently passed a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) to replace religious laws, sparking a polarizing debate and concerns over the Hindu nationalist ruling party implementing it nationwide. The UCC law, passed in Uttarakhand, aims to provide equal rights to women, including Muslims, by ending polygamy, granting equal property inheritance rights, and setting the minimum marriage age at 18 for women and 21 for men. Critics, especially Muslim leaders, are concerned that the UCC challenges Islamic laws on marriage, divorce, and inheritance. However, supporters claim the law protects women’s rights and eliminates ill practices. The ruling BJP is expected to implement the UCC nationally after the upcoming elections, despite objections from minority groups.
