The Indian government has cancelled the licence of the New Delhi-based Centre for Policy Research (CPR) to receive international funding, citing alleged violations of grant rules. This move reflects a broader trend of increased scrutiny of non-profit organizations regulated under India’s Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), with thousands of groups having their licences revoked since 2014. CPR, a prominent research organization, has stated that it was in compliance with the law and intends to contest the cancellation. The decision has been criticized by opposition parties, with the Congress party calling it a blow to India’s tradition of rigorous scholarship. The government previously suspended CPR’s licence in February 2021 over suspected violations of the FCRA, and last week confirmed the cancellation. In a separate development, Oxfam India’s FCRA registration was not renewed at the end of 2021, and the country’s federal investigative agency has initiated a probe into allegations of funding violations by the charity.
