India’s foreign minister has expressed his commitment to securing the release of eight former navy personnel who have been sentenced to death in Qatar. The men, who are reported to have been accused of spying for Israel, were arrested in Doha in August 2022. The Indian government, including the navy chief, is making every effort to help the detained individuals. The charges have not been made public and Qatar has not commented on the case. The accused individuals were employees of Al Dahra, a Gulf-based company, and various reports suggest that they were accused of spying for Israel. The sister of one of the men has dismissed the allegations and plans to seek the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Qatar rarely carries out executions, and India maintains friendly ties with the country. It is expected that India will take up the matter with Qatari authorities and provide necessary assistance to the prisoners.
