Imran Khan’s trial in the cipher case has been halted by the Islamabad High Court. The court requested to be informed about the “circumstances” that led to the trial being conducted in jail. The case relates to a diplomatic document that the Federal Investigation Agency alleges Imran never returned. Imran and his aide Shah Mahmood Qureshi were indicted on Oct 23, with both pleading not guilty. The court has instructed the special court judge to ensure a fair trial. The law ministry has also approved Imran’s trial for offences under the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999 at the Adiala jail. Imran was also recently put under arrest by NAB in the Al-Qadir Trust case and the Toshakhana reference. Meanwhile, the judge inquired when Imran would be presented before the court and whether a notification had been issued regarding the jail trial. He also expressed his desire for reporters to have access to the trial proceedings, emphasizing the benefits of an open court.
