The PTI chief, Imran Khan, who is currently in jail, stated that he verbally dictated a guest essay published in The Economist, which has gone viral on social media. He was convicted in the Toshakhana case on August 5 and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. The Islamabad High Court suspended his sentence on August 28, but he is still in jail due to other cases against him. The essay, published on January 4, expressed doubts about the upcoming elections and reiterated his allegations of regime change and the May 9 riots being a “false-flag operation”. The article stirred controversy, with an editor’s note clarifying that the Pakistan government and the US State Department denied the allegations. Imran confirmed that he gave verbal guidelines for the column and that it was written and published accordingly. He also mentioned that his party used artificial intelligence to campaign behind bars, and expressed the necessity of holding the general elections for economic and political stability. In the essay, he criticized the Pakistan Democratic Government’s performance and alleged that the establishment is not providing a level playing field for PTI. He also accused the courts of losing credibility and alleged a deal between the establishment and Nawaz Sharif for his acquittal.
