Shakira, the Grammy-winning Colombian singer and one of the world’s top-selling musicians, has been honored with a 6.5 meter bronze statue in her hometown of Barranquilla. The statue depicts her famous belly-dancing pose and was unveiled by the city’s Mayor Jaime Pumarejo in a park along the Magdalena River.
The statue, created by artist Yino Marquez, aims to inspire young girls to pursue their dreams, with the Mayor noting that Shakira herself used to perform at local children’s concerts. The sculpture captures Shakira in her signature pose, wearing a sheer skirt with shiny aluminum decoration.
The sculpture also includes a plaque that praises Shakira for her musical talent and her charity work with ‘Pies descalzos’ for early childhood development. The plaque reads, “A heart that composes, hips that do not lie, an unmatched talent, a voice that moves masses and feet that march for the good of children and humanity.”
Shakira, currently living in Miami, expressed her gratitude for the statue and emphasized that Barranquilla will always be her home.
