The Pakistan Army and civil armed forces have been approved for deployment by the caretaker federal cabinet to ensure the peaceful holding of the February 8 general elections. The decision was made in response to an increase in terrorism in the country, including the recent killing of an independent candidate in a gun attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s North Waziristan. Interim Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar presided over the federal cabinet meeting in Islamabad where the deployment was approved, along with the formation of a committee to oversee election security. Despite threat alerts, the government and security officials have assured the Election Commission of Pakistan of their readiness to hold the elections. Additionally, Section 144 has been imposed across Punjab due to threats to the law and order situation during the elections. The notification highlighted the potential for conflict between competing candidates and political parties and emphasized the need for extensive security measures to prevent any untoward incidents.
