An investigation agency has announced that employees stationed at Islamabad Mega Centre issued fake CNICs to foreigners during 2019-2020.

The arrested suspects were found to have illegally registered Afghan citizens in the family tree of laborers, using their biometrics for the Ehsaas program, according to the FIA.

The FIA also stated that the accused used to register daily wage laborers and drug addicts as fathers of Afghan citizens and received large sums of money for issuing fake CNICs.

This development comes as the caretaker government had launched a crackdown against holders of fake Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs).

In November, NADRA cancelled more than 18,000 illegal CNICs in an effort to combat the illegal issuance of identity cards and cybersecurity issues at centers.

NADRA has identified various factors contributing to the issuance of fake CNICs and has taken significant steps to tackle this challenge by monitoring and promptly cancelling illegal CNICs.

The authority is also working to improve coordination with other stakeholders and implementing strict internal scrutiny to rectify the situation.
