Tensions between North and South Korea have escalated as Pyongyang increases its weapons development and Seoul strengthens its ties with the US and Japan. North Korea’s parliament has voted to abolish all economic cooperation agreements with South Korea, following Pyongyang’s declaration of Seoul as its main enemy. The Supreme People’s Assembly voted to scrap the law on inter-Korean economic cooperation and abolished the operation of the Mount Kumgang tourism project, a symbol of economic cooperation between the two sides. South Korea pulled out of the venture in 2016 in response to North Korea’s nuclear test and missile launches. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol criticized Pyongyang’s decision, calling it an “extraordinary change” and stating that the North Korean leadership is “not a rational group.” With the possibility of violating international sanctions, restarting tourism business could provide North Korea with a means of generating hard cash.
