The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has advised the caretaker government to appoint individuals with a neutral outlook and avoid hiring those with known political allegiances. This advice comes in response to reservations expressed by a political party, which accused the caretaker government of continuing the legacy of the previous political regime.

The ECP’s advice is aimed at ensuring a level playing field for all political parties and candidates during elections. The commission emphasized the need for a neutral caretaker set-up and urged caution in selecting senior civil servants for key positions.

The letter from the ECP comes after criticism regarding the induction of former bureaucrats, such as Fawad Hasan Fawad and Ahad Cheema, into the caretaker cabinet. The presence of individuals closely associated with the previous ruling party has raised concerns about the impartiality of the caretaker government.

Fawad Hasan Fawad, a former principal secretary to ex-PM Nawaz Sharif, was recently inducted into the caretaker cabinet. Despite his previous association with the PML-N, it is believed that his appointment was based on his experience in spearheading infrastructure and energy projects. Ahad Cheema, another member of the caretaker cabinet, was also part of the previous government and is considered an exception due to his experience and expertise.

The ECP’s letter reminds the caretaker government of its responsibility to conduct elections in accordance with the law and provide a level playing field for all political parties. It serves as a reminder to avoid appointing individuals with known political allegiances to ensure fairness and neutrality in the electoral process.

In response to the criticism and concerns raised, the caretaker government has the opportunity to address these issues and appoint individuals who are impartial and committed to upholding the principles of neutrality and fairness during the election period.
