In a thrilling finish, defending champions Sri Lanka narrowly defeated Afghanistan by just two runs to secure a spot in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup on Tuesday. Afghanistan needed to chase a target of 292 runs in 37.1 overs to qualify based on net run-rate. However, they fell short as Mujeeb Ur Rahman was caught on the boundary off the first ball of the 38th over, leaving them three runs away from victory. Afghanistan still had a chance if they reached 295 runs within 37.4 overs, but they were unaware of this opportunity, resulting in number 11 Fazalhaq Farooqi blocking out two deliveries before being dismissed. Mohammad Nabi’s explosive 32-ball 65 and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi’s 66-ball 59 were the standout performances for Afghanistan.
Earlier in the match, Sri Lanka posted a total of 291-8 with Kusal Mendis leading the charge with a brilliant 84-ball 92. Mendis was well supported by Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne, who provided a solid start with a partnership of 63 runs for the first wicket. Charith Asalanka (36) and Dunith Wellalage (33 not out) made valuable contributions in the middle order. Despite losing four wickets in quick succession, Sri Lanka managed to recover thanks to a crucial 64-run partnership between Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana (28).
With the result, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh have advanced to the Super Four stage. Pakistan will face Bangladesh in Lahore to kickstart the next stage of the tournament. Sri Lanka’s victory over Afghanistan ensures their continued participation in the competition.
