Tragic Fire Accident Claims 18 Lives near Punjab’s Pindi Bhattian, Pakistan

In a devastating incident near Pindi Bhattian, Punjab, a passenger bus collided with a pick-up truck carrying drums of diesel, resulting in a fatal fire that claimed the lives of at least 18 individuals on Sunday.

The District Police Officer (DPO) reported that the collision led to the bus catching fire, causing a tragic loss of life. Both drivers of the vehicles involved in the accident also lost their lives.

The seriously injured, some of whom are in critical condition, are currently being transported to a hospital in Faisalabad for immediate medical attention.

According to a statement issued by the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP), prompt action was taken to safely evacuate 15 passengers from the bus. The deceased and injured individuals were swiftly moved to the hospital for further treatment.

The IG of the NHMP, Sultan Ali Khawaja, visited the accident site and supervised relief efforts. He expressed his grief over the lives that were lost in the tragic incident.

Providing initial insights, the NHMP spokesperson stated that an inquiry had been initiated. Preliminary investigations suggested that the accident occurred due to the negligence of the bus driver.

In light of this, the relevant commander and night patrolling officer have been suspended, and strict action will be taken against those found responsible for the accident.

Furthermore, a separate statement revealed that an inquiry committee has been established to undertake necessary departmental action. The committee is expected to submit its report within 24 hours, as stated by DIG Muhammad Saleem.

Efforts to identify the deceased have been challenging due to the severity of the burns they suffered. As a result, a DNA test will be conducted to accurately identify the bodies, as stated by an official statement issued by Edhi.

Punjab caretaker Transport Minister, Ibrahim Murad, expressed his sorrow over the loss of 18 lives and extended his condolences to the grieving families. He assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted, ensuring those responsible for the tragic accident are held accountable.

The interim minister also highlighted the negligence of bus company owners in ensuring the fitness of their vehicles in the country. He stressed the urgency of implementing a strategy to prevent the introduction of “unfit vehicles” in Punjab and other provinces.

Additionally, Interim Information Minister Murtaza Solangi expressed his condolences and emphasized the need to determine the underlying causes of the accident to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
