After the report of 9 positive cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the confirmation of the new variant of coronavirus has been made. According to the health department, including 9 positive cases of the new ‘JN-1’ variant of coronavirus have been reported in the province, all of which were reported from various hospitals in Peshawar. Among the affected individuals, 5 women are also included. The confirmation of the JN-1 and JN-1-18 variants of coronavirus has been made in 2 affected individuals. Quarantine and other necessary precautions have been mandated for the affected individuals. Health department has issued instructions for additional screening to all district health officers and medical superintendents in the province regarding new cases, while diagnostic practices related to coronavirus have been reinstated upon the report of positive cases. District health officers have been instructed to conduct contact tracing of relatives and other individuals in the districts where cases have been reported. Those individuals showing symptoms similar to the new variant of coronavirus are required to undergo testing. In case of positive cases, instructions have also been issued to send samples to the public health reference lab. Medical experts and health department officials have stated that the new coronavirus variant JN-1 is not lethal but can spread rapidly, while 2 other variants have also been reported. Hospitals have been instructed to take all necessary measures in this regard.
