Peshawar: It has been decided for the first time in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to appoint an official at the police station and establish special desks at the police stations for Khwaja Sarai. In Peshawar, the first trans desk for the Khwaja Sara community has been set up at the Gulbahar police station to solve the issues faced by the Khwaja Sarai community, where educated Khwaja Sara individuals will be appointed. For appointments on the desk, Peshawar police has asked for three names from the Khwaja Sara Association, which after verification, will be appointed as assistants to deal with the challenges, security conditions, and inclusion of FIRs at the police station level in Peshawar.

SSP Operations Peshawar, Kashif Abbas, told Express Tribune that it was a long-standing demand of the Khwaja Sara community to establish separate desks for them, which has been approved. Once the names are finalized, appointments will be completed within three days. Kashif Abbas stated that a committee has also been formed at the district level for the protection of Khwaja Sarais, with six members. This committee will be led by the SSP Operations, while the SSP Security and the SSP Faqirabad will also be members of the district committee. This committee will hold a meeting every month.

With the establishment of a special desk for Khwaja Sarai, for the first time in Peshawar, an open house was organized for Khwaja Sarais across the district, in which Khwaja Sarais from across the district participated. Speaking to Express, the president of the Transgender Community, Arzu, said that over 100 Khwaja Sarais in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been killed since 2013. The incidents of violence against transgender individuals are increasing every day. It is good news that special desks are being set up for the Khwaja Sarai community, but their rehabilitation should be carried out for a long time.

Mahi Gul, a transgender person from Peshawar, said that whenever there is violence against a Khwaja Sara, the inclusion of an FIR is done, but the culprits are soon released. She said that the open house in Peshawar is the first step, and if such initiatives are taken on a monthly basis throughout the province, then Khwaja Sarais will certainly not only get help in raising their voice, but also reduce violence against them.
