Islamabad: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested Waqar Asad in a campaign against ‘contempt’ of the Supreme Court.
Asad is accused of criticizing a decision of the Supreme Court before the general elections, in which the PTI was deprived of its electoral symbol ‘bat’.
Asad’s lawyer Eman Zainab Mazari has confirmed his arrest. Earlier, Eman Mazari had said in a video that the way journalists are being treated in this country is regrettable, constitutional courts should play their role in ensuring that fundamental rights are not violated.
Mazari had given this statement at a time when Asad was present at the FIA office but his lawyer was stopped from entering the office and the doors were closed.
In this regard, they said that after obtaining a court order from the Islamabad High Court, they went to the FIA office where the agency was directed not to harass the journalist but still he was taken into custody without the presence of a legal team from the FIA.
In a previous post, Mazari had said that Asad had been held in custody in the FIA cell for the past few hours. It should be noted that in response to an allegation of running a propaganda campaign against Chief Justice of Pakistan, the FIA had taken action against Waqar Asad in response to his request in the Islamabad High Court. Chief Justice Aamer Farooq had heard the petition.
The High Court had directed the FIA to include Waqar Asad in the investigation without harassing him.
